Genealogybot.com - About Me
Naturally one of my primary interests is in genealogy. I'm a woman
who works from home on various assorted web sites, writing and publishing,
as well as doing genealogy reasearch, crafts, organizing, and homemaking.
I have a background in computers. My first experience was visiting a local
college with friends who attended there - the computer being a mainframe
with the only output being printouts! We would visit late at night and play
a game called "Hunt the Wumpus" which someone had programmed in.
I got my first computer programming certificate in 1979 and an Associates
Degree in Computer Information Science (programming) in 1992.
Then we moved to Colorado and somehow there was always so much to
do, I just kept on working on projects at home. I taught myself html to make the
web pages (and a little bit of javascript) but I try to avoid the fancy stuff --
you'll find no automatic midi music or flash animations here!
I got involved in genealogy starting in about 1980, and got further addicted in
1989 when we lived not far from one of the LDS genealogy libraries. Due to life
circumstances, I needed an escape and there, in the dungeon of the library
sitting at the microfilm table - I found it. In those early days I was not
knowledgeable in the ways of documentation, and so now I find myself having
to re-create research that was done then.
These days I do a lot of research on the internet - I subscribe to Ancestry.com
and look at the census records online. I read the genforum messages on my main
surnames as well, and go to all the GenWeb web sites as needed.
As for the internet - my former husband and I got started calling computer bulletin
boards back in the early 1980's. I used to be on a local "chat board" in San
Diego in the late 1980's, but soon after graduated to the actual internet
through PNet in San Diego. It was run out of one of the local colleges there,
using their mainframe. I found the "roots" newsgroup and have never
looked back, although I don't participate a whole lot on genealogy usenet
groups these days. We bought our first MS-Dos computer used in 1990.
Both my children work in the computer field.
*About the Web Site*
I started this web site, because I really felt I needed to separate the genealogy
pages that were scattered around into one coherent whole. I have a lot of
photographs and documentation and I really needed ONE place to put it where
I could reach it from anywhere when traveling. I have a Rootsweb site, a
MyFamily.com web site, and scattered materials on various other sites. Now
they will all be here, easily accessible to myself and anyone else who can make
use of them.
My maiden name was Julie Truesdale, briefly (1973-1975) I was Julie Doerr
, but for the last 31 years I have been Julie Zerbe. There
are 3 other Julie Zerbes that I know of
1) Real Estate agent and child care provider in Julian California
(spells hers Juli without the E).
2) Human Resources person for Colgate-Palmolive
3) Business owner in New Mexico
None of these are me!
I run several other websites on various topics.
